Teams (beta) FAQ

What are NNL Teams?
Over the years, NNL facilities and various other groups have formed ninja teams as a way to work together and make ninja even more of a community sport. The new NNL Teams is a way for these teams to measure their progress against each other in NNL competitions. All NNL facilities will automatically have a team name reserved for them (same as the facility name), but anyone can start their own team. Find out how below.

How do teams get points?
Any team with at least 3 members in any given division (by age and gender, ex. Kids Male) at a competition will have a chance to earn team points for their team. Athlete performance translates into team points based on the placement of the team's top three performing athletes in a given division. The team whose top three performing athletes have the lowest place total will get 10 team points, the team with the second-lowest place total will get 9 team points, the team with the third-lowest place total gets 8 team points, and so on.

Can you give me an example?
Say in the Preteen Male division that the overall standings look like this:

1.       Athlete on Team A
2.       Athlete on Team B
3.       Athlete on Team A
4.       Athlete on Team B
5.       Athlete on Team A
6.       Athlete on Team B
7.       Athlete on Team A
8.       Athlete on Team C

Team A (1+3+5 = 9) has a lower place total of their top three performing athletes than Team B (2+4+6 = 12), so Team A gets 10 season team points and Team B gets 9 team points. Team C does not record any team points as they did not have at least three members in this division at this competition.

When will NNL comps begin scoring teams?
Team scoring will be in effect for every competition after Thanksgiving (Nov 25,2021).

How many athletes can a team have?
Teams can have as many athletes as they want, but in order for the team to score season points in a given division at a competition, they need to have at least 3 members compete in that division at that competition.

What happens if a team has more than 3 members compete in a given division at a competition?
Our scoring system will only look at the top three performing athletes from each team in each division of a competition.

Do teams affect individual athlete standings?
No, teams will never affect individual athlete standings or  athlete point totals.

Do I have to join a team?
No, but we encourage you to join a team to help out your ninja friends!

How do I join a team?
To join a team, log in to your NinjaWorks account (if you don’t yet have a NinjaWorks account, create one here).

Once you have logged in, if you have not already claimed your (or your child’s/dependent’s) Athlete Profile, click the green button to claim or create your Athlete Profile.

On the Athlete Profile, you’ll see the “Team” entry under NNL Season VII. Click the Edit button to choose the team.

What if I don’t see my team listed?
All NNL facilities will have teams automatically created for them. If you’d like to create your own team, please email teams@nationalninja.com.

Can I change what team I’m on during the season?
Yes, but to discourage constant changes, we’re limiting athletes to 2 changes per season.

If I change teams, what happens to the points I contributed to my old team?
Any points you earned for a team stay with the team you earned them for, but moving forward, any points would go toward your new team.

I’m a team coach. Can I add athletes to my team?
No, athletes must add themselves to your team.

I’m a team coach. Can I see athletes listed on my team roster?
Yes, the list of which athletes are on which teams is available on the NNL website (here).

Why are teams broken down by age and gender?
Since some divisions are vastly larger than others, scoring would be too heavily weighted toward divisions with fewer athletes, defeating the purpose of teams.

Will this always be the format for NNL teams?
Not necessarily. Like all policies at the NNL, we like to collect data and make informed decisions based on what is best for the community. We plan to review the teams format at the end of the season and make any necessary changes.

Is there a prize for the best team?
Not for this season since it’s just a beta test, but we hope to introduce awards for the best teams starting next season!
